There was nothing more special than talking with Grandpa Lico—the man with endless stories and adventures. Like the one about how, as a young boy in elementary school, working as a goat herder, he faced the devil himself. Yes, that devil.
One day, some of the goats Grandpa Lico was watching wandered into an old, abandoned house. People said it was haunted because, years before, two men had fought there with machetes over a woman’s love. Grandpa Lico would always say that you could still see the dried blood on the crumbling walls.
The boy from Durango, Mexico was terrified of going into that house. But he had no choice—he had to bring the goats back. The house was falling apart, it smelled awful, and it felt scary.
Even though fear held him back, that green-eyed boy found the courage to keep going. He pushed through his fear, focused on what was right, and got the goats out, one by one. He proved to himself that fear is just an illusion. When we trust our own strength, no demon can stop us—except the ones we let grow inside us.
Today, I just want to say: Thank you, Grandpa, for your stories and your lessons. Because of you, I carry your strength and the belief that fear—or any feeling—shouldn’t hold us back. It should push us forward. That strength, even after you’ve gone, feels more alive than ever.
And you—do you have a story you’d like to share with me?
